Maya, 38, is a single mother to her six-year-old son, Bar.

Maya suffers from chronic asthma, and supports herself and Bar on a monthly disability stipend.

Until recently, Maya and Bar lived with her mother. They are now living on their own in a government -subsidized apartment.

The apartment is sparsely furnished, and one of Maya’s most desperate needs is a washing machine.
