A few years ago, Avi and Sarah had to give up their apartment because they could no longer pay the mortgage. They lost almost everything in the ensuing bankruptcy.

After years of illness, Avi, 73, is completely handicapped; he has not been able to work for more than a decade. Sarah, 71, does her best to support them both, but her salary as an aide to the elderly does not go far.

Sarah also has health problems well and has required several surgeries in the past two years. She is now on medical leave from her job while the doctors try to decide what to do about a brain tumor that they recently discovered.

The couple’s 20-year old oven has stopped working, and they do not have the funds to buy a replacement.
