Because her husband, Ilan, does not work or help much at home, the burden of raising the children and caring for the house have fallen on Sarah, 36. She was also the family’s sole wage earner until she damaged her hand. She is receiving therapy for it but if and until it heals, she cannot work, has trouble managing around the house, and is in on-going pain.
Two of their six children have functional difficulties and all of them need support because of the level of tension in the home. This has gotten worse since Ilan and Sarah decided to divorce. In the meantime, they have almost no income and are struggling to pay for the family’s most basic needs. They have no way to buy a new refrigerator, even though their current one no longer works.
