Bed for Raya

Raya, 55, came to Israel from India 30 years ago. She recently moved to live with her daughter, leaving her husband of 21 years because of his abuse. He does not work and does not contribute to the well being of the family. Raya’s son still lives with his father, while their daughter, a soldier in the Israeli army, lives with her. Raya had a steady position as a reflexologist, but lost her job with the move. Reliant on her unemployment stipend, she has yet to find new work, although she is looking and hopes to have something soon.
In the meantime, her bank balance is shrinking rapidly as she continues to support her children. Raya and her daughter have been sharing a bed, as their second one is no longer stable, so does not allow for a good night’s sleep. Both recognize the importance of their having their own beds, but Raya does not have the money to pay for a new, sturdy one.
