Maya, 42, is fiercely independent. Until Corona, she had never asked for public aid. She managed to support herself and her three children with her salary as a welder in a factory and child support from her ex- husband. When the kids had to stay home because of the Corona closures, however, Maya was forced to miss many days of work, which cut severely into her income. Now that things have mostly returned to routine, Maya is trying to make up the gaps, stretching her budget as far as she can. Recently, however, her washing machine broke, and Maya does not have the funds with which to buy a new one.
