Summer camp for Maor and Elian
Sonia, 40, and Leo, 41, need our help to make it through the long, hot summer.
Sonia and Leo are raising their two young children, Maor, 9, and Elian, 7, as well as Sonia’s 16-year-old daughter, Sara, from a previous relationship.
Sonia works as a supermarket cashier. Leo used to work as a security guard, but a few years ago he underwent a cardiac episode that left him hospitalized and unable to work for an extended period of time. He began receiving a disability stipend and is hoping to return to work in the next few months. His period of unemployment left the family in dire financial straits.
In addition to their financial problems, Sonia and Leo’s two children have been diagnosed with special needs. Elian is cognitively impaired and receives a monthly disability stipend. Maor has ADD and learning disabilities. A lot of Sonia and Leo’s time, attention, and money go towards their children’s care. The couple also looks after Sonia’s elderly grandmother who lives with them.
Sonia and Leo hope to get back on their feet once Leo returns to work. In the meantime, they desperately want to send Maor and Elian to summer day camp. This will allow the kids to spend their vacation surrounded by their peers and give Sonia and Leo a chance to regroup.
