Refrigerator for Liya
Liya, 56, has four children, ages 5-28. Her oldest daughter has a son of her own, and they are dependent on Liya in every way. Liya’s 20-year-old son has very low cognitive functioning, and he is also completely dependent on his mother as well.
Liya, who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia over 15 years ago, has no contact with the father of her children. Over the years, she has single-handedly supported her family by working as a cleaner.
Two years ago, Liya was forced to stop working due to chronic hand pain. In addition to being diagnosed with a torn ligament, it was discovered that an old break she suffered as a child, had never healed properly.
Liya now needs to find a job that isn’t physically demanding. Because she doesn’t read or write, the search hasn’t been simple. Social services is trying to help her find employment. In the meantime, Liya is supporting her family on a monthly government stipend, along with her son’s disability payments.
Recently, Liya’s refrigerator broke and cannot be repaired. WIth three of her children currently living at home, a working refrigerator is a necessity.
If we could help Liya purchase a new fridge, she will be able to feed her family properly and focus on moving forward with her life.
