Fridge for Malka and her Children
Once, when her desperate financial and emotional situation became too much for her, Malka, now 45, tried to commit suicide. Intensive counseling since then has helped her to regain perspective, but things are still very difficult.
Malka has steady work as a cleaner, but her income is low. Her former husband provides no assistance. Malka had her first child at 18; that daughter is now married with two kids. Her son lives at home with his girlfriend and their infant son. Malka does all that she can to support them. Her 19-year old daughter is still in special education classes in high school, while the 17-year old twins also need comprehensive educational and social support.
In the midst of the on-going difficulties in their small, public housing unit, the refrigerator has now broken. The technician reports that the repairs would cost at least as much as a new fridge, and Malka cannot afford that amount in any case.
