Early Intervention and Trauma Support for Children in Ashkelon
Since October 7, the children of Ashkelon have been living with ongoing fear and anxiety stemming from the traumatic events they’ve endured. Following the heavy barrage of rocket fire – over 240 direct hits on their city – the residents, particularly these children, faced profound trauma. Their school schedules were disrupted, leaving their days without any structure. For months they remained confined to shelters, their lives paralyzed by fear. This prolonged period of confinement took a toll, leaving both the children and their families struggling to cope.
While therapy and mental health support are accessible through municipal and government channels, it’s vital to recognize that these institutions primarily cater to children exhibiting overt signs of distress, anxiety, or fear – the remaining children who are experiencing mild or no signs of trauma are not qualified to receive professional assistance from these state run institutions.
Recognizing the urgency to address the needs of these children, Merkaz Hachesed, an organization deeply rooted in the Ashkelon community for over 30 years and who runs 11 after-school centers, has initiated an emotional support program designed specifically to support the children of Ashkelon. This program will run for a pilot period of three months in 3 of their existing centers providing group therapy to approximately 60-70 children. Following the initial period, an evaluation will determine the continuation of this program, ensuring sustained partnership and impactful assistance for Ashkelon’s children.
Ten Gav has committed to raising 60,000 NIS to support the initial phase of the program which will provide healing and resilience to the Ashkelon children.
