There was a time when Dan and Pnina were working steadily and staying out of poverty.

But three years ago, when their youngest child was born with a heart defect that has required surgery and several hospitalizations, things got difficult. Both Dan and Pnina lost their jobs as they took the time to look after their son, and they went into debt to pay the medical bills.

Recently their oldest son was diagnosed as on the autism spectrum. His care is making it harder for his parents to look for full-time jobs. Dan and Pnina are alone in the world, with no parents or other family to support them.

Currently all four children sleep on worn-out mattresses on the floor. Dan and Pnina know that they would sleep better on real beds with sturdy mattresses, but they are not in a position to purchase these.
